Brick Joint Caulking

At Watertight Caulking, we specialize in brick joint sealing, offering a level of expertise that sets us apart from the norm. Brick joints, also known as articulation joints, are designed by bricklayers as expansion joints to allow for movement in brick walls. These joints are essential for preventing cracks and structural issues due to the natural expansion and contraction of the wall material.

In a standard straight brick wall, articulation joints should be placed at least every 6 meters. If these joints are not properly created or sealed, the movement is absorbed by the mortar joints, leading to cracks and damage — something you definitely want to avoid!

Typically, these joints are sealed with polyurethane. However, based on our extensive experience, we’ve found that polyurethane doesn’t always hold up in the long run. That’s why we prefer to use high-quality silicone for better performance and longevity.

Blockwork Caulking

Blockwork caulking is commonly used in basement walls of apartments and large custom homes, particularly with Hebel blocks, which are laid by bricklayers to form non-structural walls. These walls require expansion joints to accommodate movement, just like brick walls. We often encounter these joints in internal corner areas and other junctions.
When caulking blockwork, especially Hebel, we typically use quality polyurethane. However, if these joints are exposed to sunlight, we opt for a more durable product suited for UV resistance. Hebel blocks can be quite brittle, and we’ve found that a strong bonding product like polyurethane works best in ensuring a secure and durable application.
